Life sciences / commercial data

Key decision

Organise screens around what the analyst needs to do.

Each outcome below is labeled.

What was getting in people's way

How to read this page: the outcomes marked Built are results I can stand behind. Personas, decisions and the problem framing are my design reasoning for this product and are not interview findings. Measured numbers are added only where I hold them.

DataMAx is a cloud based commercial data management platform for life sciences. I joined Axtria as its first dedicated UX and UI designer and designed the product from early concept, while also building the company's design practice.

Dense, high stakes data

Commercial operations teams work with large data sets where mistakes are costly.

No design function

There was no established UX practice to build on.

Complex workflows

Data loads, checks and reviews involve many steps and roles.

// Strategy

From business problem to measurable outcome

KPIs are what the product is built to move. They are targets until a measured result is shown.

A dashboard and workflow experience that makes complex commercial data manageable for pharma teams.

// Users

Who the product is for

Provisional personas, derived from the workflow and the roles involved. They are not interview findings.

Commercial data analyst

Load, check and release data accurately

  • Clear status
  • Error visibility
  • Efficient bulk actions

Data operations lead

Keep deliveries on time

  • Pipeline view
  • Alerts

Business stakeholder

Trust the numbers

  • Summaries
  • Traceability

// Capabilities

What the app can do

A capability map of what the product is designed to do. It describes design scope, not a feature audit.

Data intake

Bring in commercial data from several sources.

Validation and checks

Spot errors and gaps before data is released.

Workflow tracking

See each delivery's status and owner.

Dashboards

Summaries of data health and delivery progress.

Alerts

Notify teams when something needs attention.

Role based access

Different views for analysts, leads and stakeholders.

Audit trail

Trace where numbers came from.

Cloud delivery

Browser based platform for distributed teams.

// Scenarios

Monthly data load

An analyst loads new data, sees two failed checks and fixes them before release.

Lead reviews deliveries

A data operations lead scans the dashboard and sees one delivery at risk.

Stakeholder asks why

A stakeholder traces a number back to its source in a few clicks.

// Process

How I built the practice and the product

Stage 01 of 5

Establish

Introduced user research, wireframing and prototyping where none existed.

// Design decisions

Problem, evidence, decision, trade-off, validation

Each decision is written the same way so the reasoning can be checked.

Decision 01

Design for the task, not the data model

Problem
Screens mirrored the database.
Evidence
Common enterprise SaaS issue.
Decision
Organise screens around what the analyst needs to do.
Trade-off
Needs close work with engineers.
Validation
Prototype walkthroughs with users.

Decision 02

Introduce lightweight design practice first

Problem
A new function must show value fast.
Evidence
Starting from zero.
Decision
Wireframes and prototypes as the entry point.
Trade-off
Less polish early.
Validation
Stakeholder feedback loops.

Decision 03

Make status visible everywhere

Problem
Hidden state erodes trust.
Evidence
Workflow review.
Decision
Clear progress and error states.
Trade-off
More UI to maintain.
Validation
Check with users that status is understood.

What Axtria says publicly about DataMAx. These are the company's claims, not results I measured.

  • DataMAx is presented as a data management platform with a business rules management system (BRMS).

    Source ↗
  • It includes a data quality engine and a GenAI copilot to help users work with rules and data.

    Source ↗
  • Rules and requirements are captured as reusable definitions so business users can read what a rule does.

Built

Flagship platform

The dashboard and workflow experience helped DataMAx perform strongly with major pharma clients.

Built

Design function

// Leadership

My contribution, what is next, what I learned

// What I did

  • First dedicated UX and UI designer
  • Established the design function
  • Introduced research, wireframing and prototyping
  • Designed DataMAx from early concept

// What is next
